Jul-18-06   dovif: what is the reply to 20. RG1?

I am thinking

If 20.... QH3+, 21 QH2, BF3, 22 RG2
If 20.... BF3+, 21 RG2

he is only 1P down

Jul-18-06   think: I might play the opening move in one minute online play, but nothing serious. It is astonishing that someone master-strength played it.

  Chess Classics: <dovif> 20...Rg1 21. Qh3+ Qh2 22. Bf3+ Rg2 23. Bxg2+ and black can't recapture because the queen is pinned.

Timothy Glenn Forney: This just simply breaks all theory of sound opening moves, and black punishes him for it.

  al wazir: 20. Rg1 Bf3+ 21. Rg2 Nf4, followed by 22...Bxg2 and 23...Nh3# (unless white gives up his Q by 22. Qxf4 Qxf4).

  al wazir: If 20. Rf1 then 20...Ne3:

A) 21. Rf2 Bf3+ 22. Rxf3 Qxf3+ 23. K moves Re8, with Re2 to follow.

B) 21. Nc3 Nxf1 22. Rxf1 Bf3+ 23. Rxf3 Qxf3+ 24. K moves (24. Qg2 Qxg2+ 25. Kxg2, and black is up an exchange and a P) 24...Re8, with 25...Re1 or Re2 to follow.

C) 21. Qf2 Nxf1 22. Qxg3 (22. Qxf1 Bf3+) Nxg3+, and black is a piece up.

If I had been white I would have played on a few more moves.

CapablancaFan: The Barnes Opening: Hammerschlag? Lol. This guy C Desmarais set chess opening theory back at least 200 years. 2001? This game was actually played in the 21rst century?

Confuse: what the hell was that? and this opening has a name? o _ o gg anyway : )
Jul-18-06   Zivildiener: <How come Short crushed Fritz 6 in '01 before and there wasn't a program (maybe Fritz 7 was out but this was in February) stronger than Fritz 6.> afaik short crushed fritz 6 in tournament chess (loooong time settings) but lost against whoever (I follow the 'proofs' of a chess engine, it looks like it for me) in rapid chess with shorter time control....
Jul-18-06   lopium: I would call this opening the suicide's one. Maybe as bad as the damocles with black. lol

Sneaky: Here's an example of this opening actually working out for White -- S Williams vs M Simons, 1999

  EmperorAtahualpa: This reminds me of the <WannaBe> opening 1.e4 c5 2.Ke2?? :)

I also like 1.e4 c5 2.0-0 - although some petty people complain about it.

Jul-18-06   Fischeristhebest: <tpstar>

20.<Rg1> Bf3+ 21.Rg2 Ne3 22.Kg1 Bxg2 23.Qxe3 Qxe3+ 24.Kxg2 Rf8 25.Nc3 Rf2+ 26.Kg1 Qg3+ 27.Kh1 Qh2#.

20.<Rf1> Ne3 21.Rf2 Bf3+ 22.Rxf3 Qxf3+ 23.Kg1/Kh2 Rf8 mates.

Jul-18-06   A.Alekhine: A suicidal opening!
Jul-18-06   Peligroso Patzer: In Andrew Soltis's very interesting book "Catalog of Chess Mistakes" at page 152 he gives a game (D. Brown vs. Kramer, Philadelphia 1976) that begins 1. f3 (!? per Soltis) e5 2. Kf2 (!? again per Soltis) that White wins in 38 moves. The primary lesson he seeks to impart from the game is a warning against an overconfident attitude. (Soltis speculates that Black must have imagined, after White's weird opening, that his [Black's] position "would win by itself".)
Jul-18-06   GlennOliver: Does anyone please have the PGNs of those games of Short v. Fischer / unknown computer ?

Jul-18-06   Autoreparaturwerkbau: I shall translate the pun to the croatian language: "seres" means "you are sh|tt|ng". So, "Are you you are sh|tt|ng?" Lovely.

  kevin86: I like the exchange variation of the Bird's opening:1 f4 e5 2 g3 exf4 3 gxf4 lol. We can call it the "for the birds opening"

Jul-18-06   mistergore: yoyo this game sucks
Jul-18-06   psmith: <Fischeristhebest> The link you provided does not have any games against Short.
Jul-18-06   Phony Benoni: <kevin86> Your "For the Birds Opening" reminds me of the "Bunko Gambit": 1.e4 Nc6 2.f4 f5 3.e5 g5!?. A brilliant positional concept, but with tactical weaknesses.
Jul-18-06   mahmoudkubba: <Are You Seres?>: The say of the day might also means r u a mathematical series, r u a biological series, r u a chemical series ...etc HaHaHa
